As an American proud of her Ukrainian heritage, I want to express my solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Vera Farmiga

Vera Farmiga is a well-known Hollywood actress of Ukrainian descent, an Oscar nominee, and winner of the National Board of Review and the British Independent Film Awards.

The future actress was born into a family of Ukrainian immigrants in Clifton, New Jersey, USA. Vera’s maternal grandparents were displaced and came to the United States in 1950 with their daughter, Vera’s mother, who was born in Germany. Vera’s father was born in Ukraine but grew up in Argentina. As a child, Vera attended a Ukrainian Catholic school in Newark, performed in the Ukrainian folk dance group Syzokryli, and was a member of the Ukrainian scouting organization Plast.

Until the age of six, she spoke only Ukrainian. She got her education at Syracuse University in New York (1991-1995). In 2009, Vera was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the comedy-drama Up in the Air. However, the actress is known to her fans primarily for her role as paranormal researcher Lorraine Warren in the Conjuring trilogy (2013-2021). Vera Farmiga actively supports her historical homeland in the fight against the Russian invaders: she appears on television, telling the world the truth about Russia’s war in Ukraine, and actively writes about it on her social media pages. For example, the actress took part in creating the illustrated series #WitnessingTheWar, voicing the seventh episode dedicated to the Russian missile attack on Kremenchuk. During her performance at a Rock Academy in New York concert, she turned on the air raid alarm and condemned politicians who support or justify Russia’s war.
