When we mention the famous Ukrainian artistic dynasty of the Krychevsky family, we primarily talk about its founders – the brothers Vasyl and Fedir Krychevsky. Undoubtedly, their contribution to the Ukrainian art of the 20th century is difficult to overestimate. However, the younger generation of the renowned family left a bright creative legacy as well. Speaking more specifically, the elder son of Vasyl Hryhorovych, Mykola Krychevsky (1898, Kharkiv – 1961, Paris), became the first emigrant from the dynasty.
On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian and French watercolourist and master of lyrical landscapes, Mykola Krychevsky, we invite you to the lecture by art historian Anna Leksina “Mykola Krychevsky. The first emigrant from the dynasty.” At the end of the lecture, you will know why France became a second homeland for Mykola Krychevsky, what illustrations the artist created for the French edition of Mykola Hohol’s story “Taras Bulba”, why French soldiers so favored his Ukrainian borscht during the Second World War, and whether the artist was acquainted with the Ukrainian public and political figure Volodymyr Vynnychenko.
The event will include a lecture, discussion, and a preview of a mini-exhibition of Mykola Krychevsky’s works from private collections. Throughout the event, all interested individuals will also have the opportunity to purchase the album “Mykola Krychevsky. The Artist and the World”, which contains the most comprehensive research about the artist.

“Let’s Talk About” is a series of lectures about outstanding Ukrainians who worked for the benefit of their country, as well as those who were forced to leave it. What did it mean to be Ukrainians for them? And what did they mean to our state, its culture, and national identity? We invite you to get acquainted with selected heroes and reflect on their life choices together.
