The anniversary inter-museum historical and art exhibition project “The Krychevsky Dynasty” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich and the 125th anniversary of Vasyl Krychevsky Jr., presents to the public a large-scale retrospective of the lives and artistic achievements of representatives of the outstanding Ukrainian artistic dynasty in their homeland — Ukraine.
The project features selected artworks, unique archival materials, and video recordings of representatives of three generations of the Krychevsky family: the founder of the dynasty, Vasyl Krychevsky (1873, Vorozhba – 1952, Caracas); his brother, Fedir Krychevsky (1879, Lebedyn – 1947, Irpin); his elder son, Mykola Krychevsky (1898, Kharkiv – 1961, Paris); his younger son, Vasyl Krychevsky Jr. (1901, Kharkiv – 1987, Palo Alto) and his wife Olena Krychevska (1892, Kazymyrivka – 1964, Mountain View); and granddaughter Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich (1926, Kyiv – 2021, Mountain View).
The exhibition includes more than eighty paintings and graphic works by the Krychevskys from the collections of the Museum of Ukrainian Diaspora, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, and private collections: architectural sketches, book covers, Poltava and Crimean landscapes, and émigré studies by Vasyl Krychevsky, Ukrainian landscapes and portrait studies by Fedir Krychevsky, Kyiv, Crimean, and Californian landscapes, family portraits, and design sketches by Vasyl Krychevsky Jr., Ukrainian and American landscapes by Olena Krychevska, selected Parisian, Venetian, and New York cityscapes and still lifes by Mykola Krychevsky, as well as early European works, exemplary American landscapes, and views of independent Ukraine by Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich.
The exhibition is further enriched by unique enlarged archival photographs of members of the Krychevsky dynasty from the collections of the Museum of Ukrainian Diaspora and the Central State Archives Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine, as well as quotations from the memoirs of Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich about her remarkable family.
The exhibition is complemented by archival video recordings: an excerpt from the film “Earth” (1930), on which the renowned Ukrainian writer and film director Oleksandr Dovzhenko collaborated with artist Vasyl Krychevsky Jr., from the archive of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre; and a unique interview with artist and philanthropist Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich, recorded in the United States in the mid-2010s, from the collection of the Museum of Ukrainian Diaspora.
The exhibition project “The Krychevsky Dynasty” showcases the continuity of Ukrainian art traditions and pays deep tribute to the distinguished artistic dynasty in this year of a double anniversary.
